GRENADA

This Travel Warning is being issued to urge U.S. citizens to avoid travel to Grenada due to the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan. The airport remains closed to all but emergency flights. The Government of Grenada is working to reopen the airport to commercial and charter traffic for persons who wish to leave the island.

Hurricane Ivan caused massive damage to structures on most of Grenada. There are widespread power outages and landlines are largely inoperable. Cell phone service appears to be more reliable at this time. The availability of routine provisions is minimal and is expected to remain as such until flights resume. There are reports of looting and other forms of lawlessness in conjunction with the hurricane. Local law enforcement agencies have been augmented by guard forces from neighboring islands, but remain limited in their ability to provide adequate protections.

Americans living or traveling in Grenada are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department's travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov.
